If you are interested in a more securely fitting denture, an implant retained overdenture might be the right for you. They are an affordable middle ground between a permanent all on 4 and a traditional fitting denture. Overdentures can be secured to 2 or more implants per arch and in some cases, we may be able to retrofit your current denture to attach to implants.
Benefits of implants on a lower arch
Most upper dentures can get suction, but lower dentures often don't get that. A lower denture just sits on a lower ridge and tends to float around no matter how tight the impression is because the floor of the mouth is mobile. Talking and chewing motions will often dislodge a lower denture. Well placed implants can add stability and increase function.
A lower ridge will also reabsorb much faster than an upper ridge and it will keep going till it is flat with the floor of your mouth. Two to four well placed implants on the lower arch are excellent investments in your bone. The stimulation implants provide is similar to tooth roots and will keep your lower ridge lasting longer. Once a ridge is flat, keeping a lower denture in place is even more difficult.
Benefits of implants on an upper arch.
Most upper arches can get a suction cup effect, but there are about five percent of patients that cannot get suction on top and will still need adhesive to keep their upper denture in. If this is the case for you, implants might be a great option to gain some stability.
Having a strong gag reflex and never being able to adjust to a full upper denture is another reason to consider upper implants. With implants on your upper arch, the palate of the upper denture can be cut back to a horseshoe shape providing a much more comfortable fit and giving you back the tastebuds that were covered up will a full-size denture.
If you are interested in implants, ask your dentist today about your options. We do not do implant surgery here, but we work with several dentist in the area who do. And we make the overdentures to that attach their implants.
